Rural Tourism

An alternative tourism by preserving the culture and heritage of West Bengal has been implemented this year it is still at a nascent stage with huge potential. This is an effort towards promoting Rural tourism and to preserve the culture and heritage of rural West Bengal. Rural tourism is an employment generator, creating a good number of direct and indirect employment opportunities for people from varied backgrounds both skilled and unskilled. IMSE sees this as an excellent opportunity to promote women entrepreneurship whereby the women get the scope to break the stereotypes and put their foot in the business field. The new trend of environmental consciousness among the masses and an increased interest for Indian rural cultural heritage sites and monuments, visiting places with rural settings and taking a vacation in the places away from the din and bustle of the urban life has opened up new avenues for rural tourism.

IMSE focuses on rural tourism in its campuses at Ballavpur near Santiniketan and at Labhpur in Birbhum District. Both the campuses are positioned near the sites of cultural heritage of Bengal.

The Labhpur campus is near the house of Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, the eminent Bengali writer who has penned down masterpieces very close to every Bengali's hearts like "Hansulibanker Upkatha" and "Ganadevata". The Fullara temple which is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India is also nearby. The sprawling campus with zero pollution amidst the beautiful landscape of Birbhum is a visual treat.

The Ballavpur Campus is located in the land of Rabindranath Tagore near Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan The place is a hub of tourist attractions and people from all over the world visit the place all throughout the year. Especially during "Poush Mela" marking the harvest season when the rural artisans set up stalls and exhibit their handcrafted creations alongside live performances of Bengali Folk Music-Baul, Kirtan and Kobigan and "Basanta Utsav" when people irrespective of any religion-caste-economic background engage in this grand fiesta of colours. There is a Deer Park too which is the home to a large number of naturally bred Deer. The Khoai-er-Haat is another attraction for the tourists where one can collect locally made handmade stuff. The beautiful campus here is the perfect place to experience the rich cultural heritage of Bengal.
